Lock 61

May 5th, 2009

I found these old postcard photos of Lock 61. The first one was taken from the south bank, facing west.  Notice the library hill in the background.   The second two were taken from the north bank, also facing west.  Does anyone know what the building in the background is (in the second 2 photos), rising from the treeline?  It’s a little hard to see in the photos, but it has some sort of cupola on top.

The 3rd photo appears to have been taken after this section of the Erie was converted to a spillway for Lock 30 on the Barge Canal.

I attempted to take some “then and now” photos of these scenes, but didn’t have much luck, as the 1st photo would require me to be on the roof of the plastics plant, and the second two are today obscured by brush - my photos contained more tree branches than lock walls.  The last photo is the result - lots of trees, and a bit of the curved south bank wall of the lock.
